What Was FeWo-Direkt?

FeWo-Direkt — short for Ferienwohnung Direkt, German for "vacation apartment direct" — was one of Europe's most beloved vacation rental platforms. Founded in Germany, it built its entire identity around the proposition that travelers and property owners should be able to connect without a middleman extracting fees from both sides of the transaction.

The name said it all: direct. Owners listed their properties. Travelers browsed and contacted them. The platform charged a modest listing fee for owners rather than taking a percentage of every booking. It was, for many years, the cleanest model in European vacation rentals.

What Happened: The Acquisition Story

FeWo-Direkt was acquired by HomeAway — the US-based vacation rental marketplace — which itself was subsequently acquired by Expedia Group in 2015 for $3.9 billion. At that point, FeWo-Direkt became part of a publicly traded company with a very different set of incentives.

HomeAway and its family of brands (which now includes VRBO) transitioned away from subscription-based owner fees toward the per-booking commission model — meaning the platform now takes a percentage of every completed transaction. For travelers, this appears as a service fee at checkout. For owners, it appears as a commission deducted from each payout.

The "direkt" in FeWo-Direkt became, in a meaningful sense, no longer accurate. The platform that was built on owner-direct contact became a marketplace with a fee structure that's effectively identical to Airbnb and every other major OTA.

What European Travelers and Hosts Are Looking For Now

The FeWo-Direkt audience — travellers accustomed to straightforward direct booking, owners who valued the listing-fee model — is still out there. They haven't changed what they want. The platform changed what it offered.

What that audience is searching for now:

  • A way to list properties without per-booking commissions
  • A way to find accommodations without service fees added at checkout
  • A platform that treats the owner-guest relationship as primary, not secondary to marketplace mechanics
  • Simpler economics: agree on a rate, pay that rate, done

FeWo-Direkt Alternatives: What Exists

Traum-Ferienwohnungen

A German-language platform that still operates on a subscription/listing fee model for owners. Strong presence in German-speaking markets (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). Guest-facing fees vary; the model is closer to the original FeWo-Direkt structure than most alternatives.

e-domizil / atraveo

European vacation rental platforms with significant inventory, particularly in Mediterranean destinations. Commission-based, similar to VRBO/HomeAway in structure.

Direct Owner Websites

Many experienced European hosts have moved to operating their own websites with integrated booking calendars — particularly in markets like Mallorca, Tuscany, Provence, and the Algarve, where long-term repeat guests expect direct contact.

BypassStay

BypassStay is a global direct booking registry for vacation rental owners — the most direct replacement for what FeWo-Direkt originally was. Properties are listed by owners who explicitly welcome direct inquiries. Guests pay no service fee. Owners pay no commission per booking.

For European Hosts: Why BypassStay Makes Sense

BypassStay is designed for hosts in any market who want to offer direct booking. The platform is in English, but the guest-host communication happens however works for you — and direct inquiries from European guests looking for alternatives to FeWo-Direkt, Airbnb, or VRBO are already arriving.

The economics are the same regardless of currency: you list once, guests find you, they contact you directly, and the booking happens without a platform taking 15–20% of the transaction value.

For European Travelers: What to Expect from Direct Booking

If you're used to FeWo-Direkt's original model — where you browsed, found an owner, and contacted them directly — BypassStay will feel familiar. The process is:

  • Browse properties listed by owners who welcome direct contact
  • Reach out via the host's preferred method (email, WhatsApp, phone)
  • Confirm dates, rate, and terms directly
  • Pay according to the host's process — typically a deposit and balance via bank transfer, credit card, or payment link

What you won't see: a 15% service fee appearing at checkout after you've spent 20 minutes reviewing the listing.

The Principle Behind Both

FeWo-Direkt was right about something that the industry has largely walked away from: the most satisfying travel experience starts with a direct relationship between traveler and host. The platforms added value by making discovery easier — but then kept adding friction (and fees) in ways that undermined the very relationship they were supposed to facilitate.

BypassStay is a return to that original principle. Discovery made easy. Transaction made direct. No platform sitting in the middle collecting 18% for the privilege.

The Direct Booking Platform You've Been Looking For

Whether you're a European host accustomed to FeWo-Direkt's original model, or a traveler who just wants to book without the surprise fees — BypassStay is built for you.
